Watch Counties Evangelist, Matt Rich, share his thoughts on Queen Vashti in our A-Z of Bible Characters. And read Rachel Rounds’s blog on Queen Vashti - Diva or Heroine?
The story of Queen Vashti, as told in the book of Esther, is only 12 verses long but it's the prelude to one of only two books dedicated to women in the Bible. Without Queen Vashti's decision to disobey her husband's edict, the Jewish people would not have been saved, by Esther, from their terrible fate at the hand of Xerxes through Haman's scheming plan.
How are we to view her? The author of Esther gives us no clue. She was King Nebuchadnezzar’s granddaughter and Belshazzer’s daughter. A Queen in her own right and one who would not be humiliated by a drunken, foolish husband who later, it seems, regretted his actions. (Esther 2:1)
Also, Queen Vashti and Esther share similar experiences: at different points, both Queens have to face potentially life-changing decisions (to appear before the throne unsummoned or failing to appear when summoned).
Both women violated the King's demands (Vashti to save her modesty; Esther to save her people).
After her banishment, we learn nothing more of Queen Vashti but the comparison of the two women shows us that decisions have consequences but that God uses those choices for the furtherance of His plans.
