Transforming a former library into a community hub with love and faith
When Wirral Council decided to sell off Pensby Library, local residents saw an opportunity to create something truly special for the community. Mark Johnston from Pioneer People Wirral, along with Dawn and Pete Ritchie, Pastors of Emmanuel Church in Pensby, decided to submit a proposal to turn the library into a vibrant community hub. With support from Counties Regional Connector Andy Dykes, their goal was to extend the church’s outreach beyond its walls.
“We decided right at the beginning that we would show love and friendship to people and, if you like, ‘earn the right’ to share our faith,” says Dawn.
Today, the Hope Coffee Shop in Pensby Library stands as a testament to their vision. The space blends a small library, vintage emporium, and cozy coffee shop. Dawn explains, “It’s the face of the church outside the walls of the church, serving our community.”
Thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers, both Christians and non-Christians, the project has flourished. Open three days a week, the Hope Coffee Shop has created a welcoming space for all. While volunteers offer a listening ear and support, the sharing of faith happens naturally. Dawn recalls a man who came to service the window shutters, sharing that he had recently been reflecting on Jesus. “He told me, ‘I’ve been thinking about Jesus recently,’” she says. “It was a beautiful moment.”
The Hope Coffee Shop also plays an active role in supporting local and international charitable causes. Profits from the coffee shop and vintage emporium help fund initiatives such as sending aid to The Gambia, Albania, and Ukraine. A recent fundraiser raised over £4,000 for Ukrainian refugees, uniting the community in a meaningful way.
“It’s about being the hands and feet of Jesus… doing it in a natural way,” says Dawn. Through this hub, the Ritchies and their team have created not only a space for community connection but also a place where faith is shared, lived out, and celebrated in everyday moments.
